The village is situated in the Hnilec creek valley, below the hills of Babiná, Súľová, Veľká Knola (Big Knola) and Malá Knola (Small Knola). It was founded in 1290. Originally it was a mining village known by silver ore mining.

Štefan Mišík (1843 - 1919), a historian and ethnographer, who fought for the independence of Slovakia, lived in the village, too. On the way to the mountain saddle Grajnár, right beside the road, there is a memorial tablet devoted to him.
